Passengers stranded as aviation unions shut down Arik Air operations
NAN reports that unions included the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN). Innocent Atasie, Chairman, ATSSSAN, Arik Air branch, told NAN that the workers resolved to shut down Arik operations nationwide since all efforts made to resolve the problem has failed. Atasie said the unions are unhappy that staff salaries have not been paid since April after placing 90 percent of the workforce on compulsory leave. Read more
Nigeria invest $9.4 million in Shelter Afrique; emerge as the second largest shareholder
Nigeria recently invested about $9.4 million capital in Shelter Afrique, a Pan-African housing development financier, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. This takes its total stakes to 14.77%. The investment in the Pan-African firm made Nigeria the second-largest shareholder behind Kenya. Nigeria’s stake increased to 14.77% from 7.4 % initially owned in December 2019. In the top three categories of shareholders, Kenya, the host nation leads the chart with a 14.87% stake, followed closely by Nigeria at 14.77%, and AfDB at 14.28%. Read more
JOHESU begins 7-day strike today
Health workers, under the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), have embarked on a 7 day strike today, Monday 14th. The union had earlier warned of an impending strike action, to protest of poor funding and infrastructural decay in the health sector. This was announced yesterday, in a tweet by the official handle of the Union. The union said it had exhausted all alternative measures before declaring strike. Read more
CBN unveils solar intervention fund, fixes N500m maximum limit
The Central Bank of Nigeria has introduced a solar intervention fund that will offer obligors access to credit facility that will not exceed a maximum of N500m maximum, with the aim of providing affordable electricity to rural dwellers. The CBN disclosed this in a document on Monday entitled ‘Framework for implementation of the solar connection facility.’ Read more
Oil falls to $39, Nigeria’s output rises
The international oil benchmark, Brent crude, fell below the $40 per barrel mark on Monday, amid demand worries, as the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries further cut its outlook for demand growth. Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, said its crude oil production rose slightly to 1.36 million barrels per day in August from 1.35 million bpd in July, according to OPEC. Read more
Farmers ask CBN to identify bank-funded poultry projects
The Poultry Association of Nigeria on Monday said it was interested in knowing the identities of 166 ongoing poultry projects funded by the Central Bank of Nigeria across the country. President of PAN, Ezekiel Ibrahim, made the call on behalf of the association at a briefing in Abuja that focused on the current situation of the Nigerian poultry industry and how to sustain the sector’s growth and development. John Boyega has called it quit with a brand ambassadorial deal following it's decision to cut him from remake of the advert in China. In a series of tweets shared via his Twitter page on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, the actor expressed displeasure over the brand's decision to go ahead with a new advert without consulting him. FG lauds Igbokwe on chairing America’s Universal Studio Group
In a statement, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the Federal Government is very delighted at the news of the promotion, which is the latest in a string of successes that have been recorded by Igbokwe. The statement was made available to newsmen by Mr Segun Adeyemi, Special Assistant to the President (Media) Office of the Minister of Information and Culture on Monday in Abuja. Read more
