Report: Nigeria behind South Africa, Ghana on new financial inclusion ranking
Nigeria has moved up six places to 30th position in the new global financial inclusion ranking with an overall score of 53 points — falling behind peers such as South Africa and Ghana. Financial inclusion refers to efforts by governments to make financial products and services accessible and affordable to all individuals and businesses, regardless of their personal net worth or company size. CBN directs switches to stop processing local currency transfers into dom accounts
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed switches and processors to immediately cease all local currency transfers in respect to foreign remittances to through International Transfer Money Transfer Operators (IMTO). The apex bank in a release on Wednesday, said all money market operators are to immediately disable wallets from receipts of funds from IMTOs. Read more
Declining IGR: Governors to stop outsourcing tax collection to contractors
The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has decided to stop contracting the collection of taxes to consultants to reduce expenditure and combat declining states’ internally generated revenue (IGR). Speaking at the sixth IGR national peer learning event (PLE) in Abuja on Monday, Kayode Fayemi, NGF chairman and Ekiti state governor, said the huge commission paid out to contractors can be used to boost the finances of states. FG comes under fire as 164 million phones risk disconnection
Over 164 million phone lines may be disconnected by December 31, if their owners fail to integrate their National Identity Numbers to Subscriber Identification Modules registration records. One of our correspondents gathered from the National Identity Management Commission on Wednesday that the number of Nigerians with NINs was about 43 million. Read more
Senate extends 2020 capital budget implementation to March 31, 2021
The Senate, on Wednesday, passed an executive communication from the President Muhammadu Buhari seeking the extension of the implementation of the capital aspects of the 2020 Appropriation Act, from December 31, 2020, to March 31, 2021. This follows the request by the president, through the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, in a letter to the National Assembly on Tuesday asking for the extension to enable the executive to implement the capital aspect of the budget. FG collaborates with WHO, Gavi and manufacturers for Covid-19 vaccine
The Federal Government has revealed that Nigeria has signed up with the World Health Organization (WHO), Gavi and manufacturers for the procurement of COVID-19 vaccine. According to a report from News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this disclosure was made by the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Enahire, while addressing the press at State House after the virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osibajo, on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
