Court declares stamp duty charges on bank deposits, transfers illegal
A federal high court in Asaba has declared the deduction of stamp duty charges by Nigerian banks as illegal. Nnamdi Dimgba, the judge, made this verdict on Wednesday, in a suit marked FHC/ASB/CS/139/2019 filed by one Rupert Irikefe. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Zenith Bank PLC and the attorney general of the federation were joined as defendants in the suit. Read more
Oil prices hit $50 on COVID-19 vaccine rollout
Oil prices touched their highest level since March on Thursday, as hopes of swifter-than-thought vaccine rollout fueled bullish expectations of strengthening oil demand early next year. As at Thursday afternoon, brent crude, the international benchmark, sold at $50.55 per barrel, for the first time since the first days in March, when Saudi Arabia and Russia broke up the previous OPEC+ pact, contributing to massive slides in oil prices exacerbated by the demand crash in the lockdowns in the spring. The outgoing Nigerian Ambassador to the United States of America, Justice Sylvanus Adiewere Nsofor, is dead. His death was confirmed in a statement which was issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, through a series of tweet posts on his official Twitter handle on Friday, December 11, 2020. Like Sanwo-Olu, Gov El-Rufai goes into isolation
The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has gone into isolation, as a family member and senior government officials tested positive for COVID-19. This was disclosed by the Governor in a broadcast he shared on his Twitter handle on Saturday. According to him, the measure was necessary as a precaution pending a COVID-19 test to be conducted on Sunday. Read more

The presidential media team announced that it had a meeting with BBC on its media coverage of the #EndSARS protests, and concluded that the BBC has reported “extensively” on all sides of the story. CBN approves new licence regime for payment systems
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has approved new licence categorisation for payment systems across Nigeria. This was contained in a circular released on Thursday, to all payment service providers, banks and other financial institutions and signed by Musa Jimoh, director of payments system management department of CBN. Disney announces 'first-of-its-kind' collaboration with African entertainment company
(CNN) Fed up with non-Africans telling African stories, three friends from Nigeria and Uganda created Kugali Media in 2017 to tell stories out of the continent. Through the entertainment company, the friends -- Tolu Olowofoyeku, Hamid Ibrahim, and Fikayo Adeola -- created a comic book collection called "Iwaju", set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria's capital city. Singer, Oluwaseun Kobbe Dies Of Undisclosed Illness
Olatosi Adekolu Oluwaseun, a promising young Nigerian artist has been laid to rest on Friday, December 11, 2020. Naija News understands that the singer died on Thursday morning, December 10 after suffering from an undisclosed illness. Reports had it that Oluwaseun died on the early hours of Thursday morning at Obasanjo Hospital, Ojuore, Ota, Ogun State where he was receiving treatment. Read more
