IT’S OFFICIAL: Nigeria slides into worst recession in 33 years
According to gross domestic product numbers released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Saturday, the nation recorded a contraction of 3.62 percent in the third quarter of 2020. This is the second consecutive quarterly GDP decline since the recession of 2016. The cumulative GDP for the first nine months of 2020, therefore, stood at -2.48 percent. Read more
Buhari to commission phase 1 of brand new refinery this week
President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to commission the first phase of a brand new petroleum refinery, which is located at Ibigwe, Imo State and owned by oil and gas integrated firm, Waltersmith Limited, this week. The Federal Government holds a stake in the refinery, following an investment by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). Read more
Nigerians pay heavy price as laptop scarcity bites harder
The ongoing scarcity of laptops and personal computers (PCs) may worsen as industry experts are now projecting that the prevailing paucity may persist until the third quarter of 2021. The British Parliament has disclosed that it will consider a petition by some groups and individuals, asking that it should apply sanctions against the Nigerian Government and officials for alleged human rights violations during the #EndSARS protest and Lekki shooting incident. Read more
Securities dealers oppose FG’s proposed unclaimed dividend fund
The proposed plan by the Federal Government to manage unclaimed dividends, projected to hit N200bn by the end of this year, has drawn the ire of capital market operators on the adverse effects on investor confidence and future growth of the market. In the 2020 Finance Bill, there is a proposal for the creation of an unclaimed dividend and un-utilised bank balance trust fund wherein dividends declared and unclaimed would be warehoused and owed as a perpetual debt to shareholders. Disquiet at NERC over retirement of three pioneer managers
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has asked three of its pioneer general managers to proceed on terminal leave from November 20. The affected directors are Mustapha Bukar, general manager for finance and management services; Anthony Akah (pictured), general manager of consumer affairs and head of division of consumer affairs, and Olufunke Dinneh, general manager of legal and licences. A bug meant Twitter Fleets could still be seen after they disappeared
Twitter is the latest social media site to allow users to experiment with posting disappearing content. Fleets, as Twitter calls them, allows its mobile users post short stories, like photos or videos with overlaying text, that are set to vanish after 24 hours. But a bug meant that fleets weren’t deleting properly and could still be accessed long after 24 hours had expired. Details of the bug were posted in a series of tweets on Saturday, less than a week after the feature launched. Read more
