Ease of doing business: Name reservation, business registration to now take 48 hours
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) says activities like name reservation and registration of new businesses will now take 48 hours. The commission announced the new timeline for processing of documents in a notice on Tuesday. This is compared to the one to two week timeline required for business registration. Read more
Chevron to sack 25% of its workforce in Nigeria
The Management of Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), declared that it has no plans to migrate Nigerian jobs outside the country. According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this clarification was made in a statement by Chevron’s General Manager for Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, Mr Esimaje Brikinn, on Friday, October 2, 2020. AfCFTA: Continental free trade will reduce value erosion of naira – FG
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement will reduce the erosion of the naira, which has suffered nearly 90% devaluation since 2016, through exports of Nigerian made goods and services, and give exposure of the naira to other currencies. This was disclosed by Mr. Francis Anatogu, Secretary, National Action Committee on AfCFTA, in an interview with TVC News on Friday afternoon. Read more
Nuclear-weapon States too slow to eliminate their nuclear arsenals – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigeria is worried about the slow pace of progress of nuclear-weapon states to accomplish the total elimination of their nuclear arsenals, in accordance with their legal obligations, as he warned that that trafficking of nuclear materials, remains a threat to international peace and security. The President disclosed this in a video message to the high-level UN meeting on Friday, commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Read more
GSM users hit 203 million, MTN, Airtel lead growth
MTN and Airtel are the biggest gainers of new mobile phone subscriptions in August, the latest monthly subscribers’ data from the Nigerian Communications Commission have shown. This is as the mobile phone subscribers’ base rose to 203.16 million in August from 198.96 million in July. Read more
WTO: Okonjo-Iweala, Mohamed, three others know fate next week
The five candidates still in the race for the job of director-general of the World Trade Organisation will know their fate next week, according to AFP. The PUNCH had earlier reported that three candidates including Mexico’s Jesus Seade, Egypt’s Hamid Mamdouh, and Moldova’s Tudor Ulianovschi were dropped last month as the Geneva-based organisation said they didn’t secure enough support in a first of three rounds of voting. Petrol: Comparing Nigeria with Saudi Arabia ridiculous, TUC tells Buhari
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has condemned the comparison between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia made by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in his Independence Day address. The President, TUC, Quadri Olaleye, in a statement on Thursday, said the comparison was unnecessary as Nigeria was not at par in all ramifications with Saudi Arabia and other countries mentioned. EbonyLife Films has announced that their latest offering, the Netflix Original film Òlòtūré, will debut on the 2nd Of October with a virtual red carpet premiere and Netflix Watch Party to ensure that fans do not feel left out of the glamorous occasion. Anticipation for the movie has been building since 2019, but this is the first time the film will be seen, aside from exclusive private screenings in Lagos and Los Angeles, and the Carthage Film Festival in Tunisia.
