UK scientists worry vaccines may not work on South African Covid-19 strain
UK scientists are worried that the Covid-19 vaccines being rolled out in Britain may not be able to protect against a new strain of the coronavirus that emerged in South Africa and has spread to other parts of the globe, according to Reuters. The British Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, while citing a conversation he had with his South African counterpart, said he was very worried about the variant discovered in South Africa as he believes that it is more of a problem than the UK variant. Neimeth proposes N123.45 million dividend to be distributed to shareholders
The Board of Directors of Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc, has proposed a total final dividend of N123.45 million to be distributed to the shareholders of the company, as final dividend for the period ended 30th September 2020. NERC approves another increase in electricity tariff
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved an increase in electricity tariff across the country — with the exception of customers who are being served less than an average of 12 hours per day in a given month. According to a directive issued on December 31, 2020, and signed by Sanusi Garba, NERC chairman, the new tariff will take effect from January 1. Read more
Peace Mass Transit buys major stake in C&I Leasing with Neoma Africa’s loan stock acquisition
Peace Mass Transit, a transport and logistics services provider, has acquired C&I Leasing Plc’s 313.3 million units of the Neoma Africa Fund L.L.C. (formerly Aureos Africa Fund, L.L.C.) unsecured variable coupon redeemable convertible loan stock in registered units of N4.75 each. In a notice to the Nigerian Stock Exchange, signed by Mbanugo Udenze & Co, the company secretary, the transaction will strengthen the capital base of the company and also improve the clarity of the capital structure. Paternity scandal: FCMB MD goes on leave as probe begins
The Managing Director, First City Monument Bank Limited, Adam Nuru, has volunteered to go on leave to enable the bank to investigate the paternity allegations against him. This was disclosed in a statement by the bank on Tuesday. Read more
‘Tricycle, motorcycles not in Lagos transport masterplan’
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde, has said that the state is banning Keke and Okada because they are not in the state’s transportation master plan. He said this in a telephone interview with our correspondent, noting that Lagos as a smart city would require an integrated system consisting of road, water and rail. Read more

Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday told President Donald Trump that he does not have the authority to block certification of President-elect Joe Biden's win when Congress meets to count electoral votes, sources told CNN. Trump, who already had turned up the pressure on Pence to steal the election, warned him that it would be politically "damaging" for Pence to refuse to block certification, according to a source familiar with the conversation. COVID-19: 2021 Grammy Awards Postponed
Organizers of the 2021 Grammy Awards have postponed the event originally scheduled for January 31st due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19. Multiple sources have told Rolling Stone magazine that organizers are aiming to hold the award events sometime in March but no new date has officially been fixed. Read more
Just In: Nollywood Veteran Actress Orisabunmi Is Dead
The sudden death of veteran Nollywood Yoruba actress, Folake Aremu, popularly known as Orisabunmi has been announced. The actress died in the early hours of Tuesday, January 5, 2021 in Ibadan the Oyo State capital at the age of 60, Naija News understands. Her death was confirmed by the Governor of Theater Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) in Oyo State, Mrs Rose Odika. Read more
