No need for alarm over reported new Covid-19 variant – WHO
The World Health Organization warned against panicking over the new Covid-19 variant being reported to be spreading in the UK and stated that mutations are normal in the cycle of a virus commending scientists for real-life surveillance of the variant. National Assembly jerks up budget, passes N13.5tn 2021 appropriation bill
The National Assembly on Monday passed the 2021 Appropriation Bill, raising the total estimates from the proposed N13.08tn to N13,588,027,886,175, an increase of over N500bn. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had on October 8, 2020, laid the money bill before a joint session of the National Assembly. Read more
Dangote Cement plans Nigeria’s first share buyback
Dangote Cement Plc, owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, plans a buyback of the company’s shares next week to boost shareholder value. According to Bloomberg News, the company will repurchase as much as 10 per cent of the issued capital, starting with a first tranche of 85.2 million shares of 50 kobo each, or 0.5 per cent of the total in issue, it said in a filing to the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Monday. Covid-19: Nigeria considers international travel ban as new strain gains momentum
The Presidential Task Force against Covid-19 is considering restricting international travel into Nigeria as fear of a second wave triggered a second lockdown of the country. The Federal Government on Monday, December 21st, directed all schools to remain closed until at least January 18, 2020, as well as ordering all Federal Government workers on grade level 12 and below to stay at home for the next 5 weeks. Nigeria’s oil faces threat as electric vehicle sales rise
The rising number of countries gradually shifting from fossil fuels and encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles may pose a major threat to Nigeria’s crude oil exports. Sales of electric cars topped 2.1 million globally in 2019, surpassing 2018 – already a record year – to boost the stock to 7.2 million electric cars, with China leading the charge, according to the International Energy Agency. CBN revokes licence of 42 microfinance banks
The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) on Friday made this known in a statement on its website. “This is to inform the depositors, creditors, shareholders and the general public that the operating licenses of the under listed Forty-Two (42) Microfinance Banks (MFBs) have been revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) effective 12th November, 2020,” the statement read.
