FG to borrow dormant account balances, unclaimed dividends
Unclaimed dividends and bank account balances unattended to for at least six years will be available as special credit to the federal government through the Unclaimed Funds Trust Fund. According to the Finance Act 2020 recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, the trust fund will be a sub-fund of the Crisis Intervention Fund. Read more
Customers to pay less as FG removes VAT on commercial flight tickets
The federal government has exempted commercial flight tickets from value-added tax (VAT). This is contained in the 2020 finance bill, which was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on December 31, 2020. The bill exempts “airline transportation tickets issued and sold by commercial airlines registered in Nigeria” and “hire, rental or lease of tractors, ploughs and other agricultural equipment for agricultural purposes” from VAT. US Capitol storming: 4 people confirmed dead, Trump temporarily suspended on Twitter
The Washington DC Police has stated that 4 people were killed and 52 people arrested over the attempted storming of the Capitol building by Donald Trump supporters. Social media companies, including Facebook and Twitter, froze Trump’s accounts for 24 hours and 12 hours respectively. Read more
Covid-19: WHO team to probe origin of Coronavirus refused entry by China
The World Health Organization (WHO) said that China has denied entry into the country, a team probing the origins of the Coronavirus pandemic, thereby throwing the expert mission into disarray at the last minute, despite months of negotiations. According to a report from CNN, this disclosure was made by the WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a rare criticism by the UN health agency on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. Read more
Access Bank completes acquisition of Zambian Cavmont Bank Ltd
Access Bank Plc has announced that its Zambian subsidiary (Access Bank, Zambia) has completed the acquisition of Cavmont Bank Limited, following the fulfilment of pre-requisite conditions, including regulatory approvals. The tier-1 bank made the disclosure through a press statement signed by the Bank’s secretary, Sunday Ekwochi and sent to the Nigerian Stock Exchange, as seen by Nairametrics. Read more
Alibaba, Tencent shares tumble on US ban fears
Shares in China’s two biggest companies Alibaba and Tencent tumbled in Hong Kong on Thursday in response to the media reports that the Trump administration plans to press ahead with a ban on Americans investing in them. Ecommerce titan Alibaba sank more than four per cent and internet powerhouse Tencent shed 3.3 in morning trade after the Wall Street Journal said officials in multiple government departments were assessing the impact of an investment ban. FCMB appoints Yemisi Edun as acting managing director
First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has appointed Yemisi Edun as its new managing director in acting capacity, amid allegations of marital infidelity between Adam Nuru, the managing director, and Moyo Thomas, a former employee of the bank. In a tweet on Wednesday, FCMB said Edun will act as the managing director, while Nuru is on leave. Read more
