Govt halts retrenchment of 300 Arik Air staff
The Federal Government on Thursday said the over 100 per cent hike in domestic airfares was inevitable, describing it as one of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also disclosed that 300 employees of Arik Air who would have been recently sacked by the carrier had not been relieved of their jobs based on the intervention of government. Read more
Reps pass 2020 Finance Bill for second reading
The House of Representatives, on Thursday, passed for second reading, the Finance Bill 2020. It is titled, ‘A Bill for an Act to Amend the Capital Gains Tax Act, Companies Income Tax Act, Personal Income Tax Act, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, Customs and Excise Tariff, Etc. (Consolidated) Act, Value Added Tax Act, Federal Inland Revenue Services (Establishment) Act, Nigerian Export Processing Zone Act, Oil and Gas Export Free Zone Act, Fiscal Responsibility Act, Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020, and the Public Procurement Act.’ Read more
Minister, shareholders disagree over N150b unclaimed dividends
The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, yesterday, disagreed with the Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria over plans by the Federal Government to take over unclaimed dividends worth over N150billion in the country. While the minister insisted that the Federal Government has the right to borrow any unclaimed dividends that is lying fallow, the shareholders said such money should be returned to the companies that issued the dividends in the first place. Nigeria to vaccinate 20 million people against Covid-19
The Nigerian Health Minister, Osagie Ehanire, has disclosed that plans are underway to vaccinate as many people as possible, starting with 20 million doses of the vaccine. He said during a televised news conference in Abuja that: “The government will receive 20 million doses of a Covid-19 vaccine. This will make it possible to vaccinate about 20 million people against the novel coronavirus.” Read more
NCC to Nigerians: Submit NIN to telcos for SIM registration
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says Nigerians should get a national identity number and submit to their network operators. The commission disclosed this on Wednesday in a revised statement announcing the suspension of sales and reactivation of new SIM cards. Read more
Poor Nigerians will reach 100 million by 2022 – World Bank
The World Bank on Thursday projected that the number of poor Nigerians will increase from the current 90 million to about 100 million by 2022 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the country’s economy. It stated that by 2022, about 11 million more Nigerians were expected to fall into poverty due to the COVID-19 crisis. Read more

The Nigerian Army has cancelled the remaining activities in the ongoing Chief of Army Staff’s annual conference 2020 after a participant died in Abuja, on Tuesday. The victim, identified as Maj. Gen. John Irefin, the General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, reportedly died of complications from COVID-19. Read more
