CBN says revised new cheque book to become fully operational from April 1, 2021
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has in a circular to all Deposit Money Banks (DMBs), accredited Cheque Printers/Personalisers, and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), stated that the revised cheque book will become fully operational from April 1, 2021. The apex bank has directed all DMBs to enlighten their customers on the revised cheque book, introduced across all banks as full enforcement of its usage will commence on the stated date. Read more
Facebook Oversight Board to review decision to suspend Trump’s account
Facebook’s Oversight Board has received a proposal to revisit the decision to indefinitely suspend former US President, Donald Trump’s access to Facebook and Instagram. On January 7, Facebook suspended Trump’s account indefinitely, a decision reached when he incited a violent mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol, leaving the country shaken. Read more
CBN threatens to shut accounts of diaspora remittance violators
The Central Bank of Nigeria has vowed to withdraw the operating licenses of operators who continue to violate rules regulating diaspora remittances into the country. It stated that it would not tolerate the clear contravention of its directive that all remittances be paid to beneficiaries in dollars. Read more
NIN deadline: NIMC begins enrolment of diplomats
The National Identity Management Commission on Friday announced that it had commenced the National Identity Number enrolment of foreign diplomats in Nigeria. Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, had directed the NIMC to set up an enrolment centre for diplomats at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. Read more
Google threatens to remove its search engine from Australia due to media code
Google said that it will disable its search engine in Australia if the government proceeds with a media code that would force it and Facebook Inc to pay local media companies for sharing their content. The code requires Google and Facebook to enter mandatory arbitration with media companies if they cannot reach an agreement over the value of their content within three months. Read more
Elon Musk to offer $100 million prize for best carbon capture technology
Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk on Thursday took to Twitter to promise a $100 million prize for the development of the “best” carbon capture technology. Elon Musk wrote in a tweet, “Am donating $100M towards a prize for best carbon capture technology,” details next week. Carbon capture technology is designed to prevent the release of CO2 generated through conventional power generation and industrial production processes by injecting the CO2 into suitable underground storage reservoirs. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that Africa is in danger of being left behind in Covid-19 vaccination as countries from other regions strike bilateral deals, thereby driving up prices. Shot in Lagos in 2018, the Blue Pictures Studio first feature film is being considered for theatrical release this year.
