Cheap Nigerian stocks outperform African peers
Nigerian stocks are leading continental peers amid renewed investors’ appetite in bellwether stocks, an analysis by TheCable has shown. Nigerian stocks, still down -3.2 percent year-to-date is ahead of South Africa at -4.97 percent, Egypt at -21.85 percent, Kenya at -16.04 percent, and Morocco -11.88 percent. Read more
Zenith Bank lifts balance sheet by N1.2trn in six months
Zenith Bank Plc grew the size of the balance sheet by N1.23 trillion in the first six months of 2020 financial year, more than three times the increase in asset base in all of 2019. With an asset portfolio of roughly N7.6 trillion, the bank is running neck to neck with the industry leader on who leads the Nigerian banking space. In the event of overtaking, Zenith Bank will add asset size to its long-held industry ruling by profit volume. Read more
Banks, insurance companies to join NLC strike
The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) says its members will join the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its strike. The NLC recently announced its plans to embark on a nationwide strike to protest the hike in petrol pump price and electricity tariff. The industrial action is scheduled to start on September 28. N4.16 billion unpaid lottery revenue recovered by EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that it recovered over N4.16 billion for the government from lottery companies which they had refused to remit. This was disclosed by the Acting Chairman. Mohammed Umar Abbah on Thursday evening, at the EFCC Headquarters during a meeting with Williams Alo of the Ministerial Task Force for recovery of unpaid revenues from lottery businesses. Read more
Presidency denies building rail line from Nigeria to Niger Republic
The Presidency has disclosed that the Federal Government is not constructing a rail line from Nigeria linking Kano-Dutse-Maradi into the Niger Republic, as it will only stop at the designated border point. This follows the public outcry that greeted the Federal Government’s announcement of the rail project. Read more
UK moves to seize $39 million from Ibori’s lawyer over role in former Governor’s case
British prosecutors have moved to seize about $39.3 million (30.8 million pounds) from a London lawyer, who helped former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, in looting and laundering illegal funds from the oil-rich state. The British lawyer, Bhadresh Gohil, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, following his conviction in 2010 on 13 counts of money-laundering, and other offenses, over his role in the fraud and money laundering case of James Ibori, who was the former governor of Delta State, from 1999 to 2007. Mitsubishi to stop Pajero sale in Nigeria 2021
The sale of Mitsubishi Pajero would be discontinued in Nigeria at the end of next year, sole distributor of the brand of vehicles in the country, Massilia Motors, has said. A statement issued on Thursday said the decision to halt the sale was taken following the announcement by the automaker, Mitsubishi, to stop the production of the model next year, gradually leaving the stage for a popular new model, Pajero Sport. Julius Berger to diversify into agro-processing
Construction giant, Julius Berger, has said it is looking into diversification opportunities, based on the emerging developments in Nigeria and the resultant reforms by the government. In a regulatory filing to the Nigerian Stock Exchange, it said the board approved a diversification opportunity for the company in agro-processing, after a meeting held on September 22. Read more
