FIRS: Nigeria lost N5.4trn to tax evasion by multinationals in 10 years

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) says the country lost N5.4 trillion to tax evasion by multinationals. Speaking at a workshop in Abuja on Monday, Muhammad Nami, the FIRS chairman, explained that the revenue was lost between 2007 and 2017. While commending some multinational corporations for leading in tax compliance in various sectors, he expressed worries that many rich multinational corporations did not pay the right taxes due to them, let alone pay their taxes voluntarily. The Federal Government has insisted that it will go ahead with its policy on the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) and electricity, with no provision made in the 2021 budget for their subsidy. This disclosure was made by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, during a virtual public presentation of the Breakdown and Highlights of 2021 Appropriation Act on Tuesday in Abuja. Mike Pence says he will not invoke 25th amendment to impeach Trump

The U.S Vice President, Mike Pence, has stated that he will not invoke the 25th Amendment needed to impeach Trump. This comes as several House Republicans also joined the call to impeach Trump. Mike Pence disclosed this in a letter to House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, as reported by Bloomberg. The Vice President urged that it was time for USA to heal from the Capitol attacks last week. FG borrows N2.8 trillion from CBN via Ways and Means

The Central Bank of Nigeria backstopped a total of N2.8 trillion in support loans to the Federal Government in 2020. This follows the FG’s failure to meet its revenue targets due to the impact of the fall in oil prices and covid-19 pandemic. The support came in the form of Ways and Means, a provision in the CBN act that allows the government to borrow from the Apex Bank. Provisions in the act cap monetary financing of fiscal deficits at 5% of the prior year’s revenues. Read more

The United States Government wants all international passengers to provide a negative Covid-19 test before they board a flight into the country. This is according to a report from the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control Prevention in the US. The new rule will also affect United States citizens in the country. NBS: Internet subscribers grew to 151 million in Q3 2020

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the number of Internet subscribers in the country grew to 151.51 million subscribers in the third quarter of 2020. This is compared to the 143.63 million subscribers recorded in the second quarter. According to the NBS report on telecoms data for Q2 and Q3 2020 released on Sunday, this represents a 5.48 percent growth quarter-on-quarter. Read more

The state government made this known following reactions after it appointed Ebizi Blessing Eradiri as the face of the Bayelsa Girl Child.
