Herconomy World Savings Day Recap
Every year, on the 31st of October, the whole world is reminded of the possibilities that abound when we save and plan for our future.
This year, we at Herconomy decided to own this conversation and take it a notch by having several women who are thought leaders in their space and bringing them to talk to our community.
Herconomy is on a mission to empower, not just by providing short-term solutions but by implementing long-term cultures that will forever shape the future of women and their money. On this journey, we have realised that so many shortcomings that women face are institutional and hence the need to change the narrative, using tech, and encouraging women to save and build their own.
This World Savings Day falls in line with Herconomy's Each Woman Bring One Campaign, and so we got about 18 Women to come to speak with us on their savings journeys and how they navigate blockers in their careers or business.
Event Breakdown:
Nancy Ogbue was the host ushering in our amazing speakers and panellists.
Our founder, Ife Durosinmi-Etti and Kari Tukur gave some deep insights into how the current realities have not served women fully. According to Ife,
"Women are losing out on a lot of opportunities because they are unbanked and do not have access to loans."
This is why Herconomy is building a bank for women.
In the follow-up conversation between Ara and Samira, Nigeria's Savings Landscape: Country Realities and Opportunities; Samira noted that "We need to bring solutions to the unbanked women."
As part of the Faith Nexus, Mutiat reminded us that "Charity does not reduce wealth. In fact, it increases it."
While Ella buttressed that "Community has a way of helping you Save, Manage, Invest,"
Rayo reminded us to " Save! Before you start spending anything!" during the Her: Home, Relationship and Money session.
Rev. Funke Felix-Adejumo and Pastor Imisi Owolabi, in a power-filled session moderated by Pastor Kemi Jolayemi, reminded us to "Save seed and spend"; Rev Funke, and to "Give your money purpose."
And to end it all, our dearest business gurus with up to 40 years of experience between them gave the closing panel.
While Mrs Betty Irabor couldn't stress enough that women should
"Take accountability and accept that you have made mistakes",
Aunty Funke Bucknor-Obruthe encouraged us: "You are going to make mistakes
Get up and start again."
The final session, Her Money Lessons, moderated by Herconomy COO; Vive, gave some great life lessons from these amazing women that rounded out the day perfectly.
